25 mm OD |
![]() 25 mm OD Kit |
Shaw Tool kits are assemblages of parts which are necessary for portable core drill substrate penetration and sampling. Parts such as extensions or bits can be added
to the kits as desired.
The 25 mm kit of equipment is best for investigations in which large diameter cores are not critical. It is faster cutting and requires less water than our 41 mm OD and 51 mm OD equipment. |
![]() Shaw Tool Backpack |
The Shaw Tool backpack is fitted for its engine drill and other components. It is large (70 cm x 38 cm x 30 cm), padded, rugged and comfortable for carrying and protecting drilling equipment .
![]() Engine Drill |
The Shaw engine drill reliably delivers a high ratio of power to in-hand weight (1450 watts (2 hp.), / 8.2 kg (18 lb.) for a dependable, non-racing kind of two stroke engine. Its planetary gearbox is efficient (less than 5% energy loss) and resistant to gear damage (three points gear contact).
![]() Extension |
Shaw 25 mm extensions are comprised of thick walled stainless steel bodies and nearly solid female couplings to prevent bending despite their relatively small diameter (1 inch).
![]() Core Barrel |
The Shaw 25 mm core barrel, although thick walled, offers sufficient clearance around stone cores for sample extraction.
![]() Diamond Core Bit |
Shaw cylinder segment diamond core bits cut rock faster than masonry style diamond bits because the grinding surface areas are small but well served with drilling fluid that cools the bit and flushes the cuttings. Round cross section segments are resistant to breakage because they are brazed solidly into the bit pedestal wall.
![]() Loose Materials Bit |
The Shaw loose materials bit can be used in soft soils and other loose earth materials to clear a path for the diamond core bit. Sometimes a little bentonite clay can be used with water to form an adhesive paste for stabilize boring walls.
![]() Core Catcher |
The core catcher is a one-way device: the core must always be forced backward with the knockout rod from the mouth to the tail.
![]() Core Breaker |
Rock core which remains connected to its substrate must be disconnected for sample collection. The core breaker, part hammer and part wedge, is vented to prevent the worst of piston-like suction and compression effects.
![]() Knockout Rod |
The knockout rod is used to force cores through the core barrel.
![]() Extension to core barrel adapter |
An adaptor is needed between the 25 mm OD extension with one J-slot to the core barrel with two J-slots.
![]() T Handle |
The T handle is used for turning and lifting the drill string.
![]() 12V Pump |
The 12V, 60 psi pump was added to the lineup as the preferred method of lubricating and cooling vs the compression bottles of the first generation Shaw drill. It requires the use of a battery.
![]() Compression Bottle Water Supply |
In some situations compression bottles water supply is still preferable. Two bottles are typically used in a backpack load to provide adequate water volume.
![]() 25 mm OD x 41 mm OD adaptor |
41 mm x 25 mm OD adaptor allows use of the 25 mm OD drill string with a 41 mm water swivel.
![]() Push Type Soil Sampler |
The 25 mm OD push type sampler facilitates capture of soft materials including moist soil, sand and some kinds of soft clay.
![]() Consumables |
The consumables bag contains: 4 mm OD bit maintenance file, grease tube, air filter, o-rings, spark plug spark plug wrench, and engine manual.
41 mm OD |
![]() 41 mm OD Kit |
The most popular of the three sizes of the Shaw portable core drill, 41 mm OD drill string, can be comfortably advanced to a depth of 20 m. It produces a small (36 mm) BQ rock core.
![]() Backpack |
The Shaw Tool backpack is fitted for its engine drill and other components. It is large (70 cm x 38 cm x 30 cm), padded, rugged and comfortable for carrying and protecting drilling equipment.
![]() Engine Drill |
The Shaw engine drill reliably delivers a high ratio of power per in-hand weight (1450 watts/ 17.7 kg) for a dependable non-racing kind of two stroke engine. Its planetary gearbox is very efficient (only 5% energy loss) and also highly resistant to gear damage (three points contact) from interrupted cuts.
![]() Extension |
The stainless steel tube walls of 41 mm OD extension are not so thick (1.5 mm) as 25 mm extensions (2.1 mm). Being relatively light in weight they are easy to use for deeper borings.
![]() Core Barrel |
The 41 mm OD core barrel is similar in appearance to the 41 mm OD extension. It bears the replaceable diamond core bit and functions to capture core samples of earth materials.
![]() Cylinder segment diamond core bit |
Cylinder segment diamond core bits cut rock faster than masonry style bits because segments are better served with circulating drilling fluid. The segments are also resistant to breakage because they are entirely embedded in the bit pedestal wall.
![]() Core Catcher |
The core catcher, with inward angled tabs, prevents rock core samples from slipping out of the mouth of the core barrel.
![]() Loose Materials Bit |
In cohesive material such as firm soil or in loose materials supplied with an adhesive bentonite paste, the loose materials bit can be used to open a stable hole for the passage of a diamond core bit.
![]() Core Breaker |
Rock core which remains connected to its substrate must be broken for sample collection. The Shaw core breaker, part hammer and part wedge, is vented to prevent the worst of piston-like suction and compression effects in the boring.
![]() T Handle |
The T handle is used for turning and lifting the drill string.
![]() Knockout Rod |
The knockout rod is used to force cores out of the core barrel.
![]() Compression Water Bottle |
Compression bottles can be used as well as 12 volt pumps for delivering water to the drill string and diamond bit.
![]() 12V Pump |
The 12V, 60 psi pump was added to the lineup as the preferred method of lubricating and cooling vs the compression bottles of the first generation Shaw drill. It requires the use of a battery.
![]() 41 mm OD X 51 mm OD adaptor |
The 41 mm OD x 51 mm OD adaptor allows interchangeability of 41 mm with 51 mm equipment.
![]() Consumables |
The consumables bag contains a 4 mm round file, grease tube, air filter, o-rings, spark plug , open end wrench, spark plug wrench, and engine manual.
51 mm OD |
![]() 51 mm OD Kit |
The Shaw 51 mm kit has been used primarily for the construction of monitoring wells and for collection of large diameter core samples.

The 51 mm core barrel holds diamond bits or core catcher tips.
![]() Core Catcher |
The 51 mm OD core catcher grips cores for retrieval.
![]() 51 mm diamond core bit |
51 mm diamond core bits are fast cutting.
![]() Loose Materials Bit |
The big 51 mm loose materials bit can often open holes in cohesive or other loose materials including soil, tephra and some gravels.
![]() Knockout Rod |
The knockout rod is used to force rock cores from the core barrel.
![]() Core Breaker |
