Welcome to the Shaw Tool web site. Described and offered for sale here is patented, very easy to use in the field, fast penetrating, deep boring, handheld diamond coring equipment presently used for a number of field purposes. These include near-surface mineral exploration, geotechnical investigation, concrete coring, concrete construction (anchor bolts and rebar) concrete demolition (expanding concrete), blasting, and farm fence and gate post installations in rock. These applications are very briefly described on the "Applications page". Other applications including small diameter well construction are also emerging as the tool's capabilities are revealed, largely and interestingly by customer experiment rather than my own hopes. As they become available in coming weeks I will place statements, photographs and video footage of the field experiences of my customers on the "Testimonials" page.
Earlier this year I thoroughly re-designed my equipment to make it's couplings much more robust. As a result it is now capable of penetrating up to 15 meters without mechanical lifting devices and considerably deeper with their use. The current record depth of penetration is 22 meters. Doubtless this record will soon be broken. With the addition of a new loose materials bit for use in fault gouge, soil, artificial fill, alluvium and colluvium, my set of boring tools is much more broadly capable, reliable and faster penetrating than it was even a few months ago.
While not yet available for sale, I am presently having manufactured a new type of provisionally patented diamond core bit. Prototype boring test results of this "elephant's tooth" (longevity and alternating hard and soft ridges for self sharpening function) bit indicate that it will be nearly twice as fast cutting (14 inches per minute in basalt) have a working life at least six times longer, be far less likely to lose water circulation in clay rich materials by provision of well defined water channels and be mechanically far stronger than brittle, conventional sintered diamond crowns.

Portable
When carried in the backpack, a standard kit of Shaw Core Drill tools and accessories weighs less than 40 pounds.
Self-Contained
All of the tools you will need for drilling and sampling most kinds of rock can be carried by an average man or woman in the backpack. There is plenty of room too for extra fuel, water and personal gear.
Easy To Use
Coupling and de-coupling the lead and extensions are simple turn and pull/push hand motions which don’t require the use of additional tools. Removal of cores and core fragments is especially quick and thorough with our core catcher.
Fast Drilling
Rock penetration rates are exceptional because the Shaw Core Drill bit kerf is narrow and its full throttle r.p.m. is high.
